Herbs

This is a brief run down of some of the herbs you can grow on your allotment, in the greenhouse or on the kitchen windowseal.

Organic Allotment Gardening

Basil      

One of the most widely used herbs in Italian cooking. It is beautiful torn into salads as well as being used in conventional cooking. Due to the nature of its leaves it requires a warm environment for it to really thrive.

Corriander

Widely used in Asian cooking, its strong unique flavour can totally transform a dish and its succulant green leaves can add a splash of colour.

Dill

This is a very delicate herb ideal for white fish dishes. It too has a lovely aroma but is one of the less hardy of the common herbs and requires a little TLC.

Mint

Has a wonderful aroma and can make the whole garden smell. It has numerous cooking applications but BEWARE this is a very invasive plant. It should only be grown in a strong pot and checked from tiime to time that it has not spread out the bottom!!

Oregano

Many people have this growing in their garden without even realising it. This herb is relatively hardy but will die down over the winter month and will look very tired. Its a staple in metitteranian cooking and one of the main herbs in favourites such as Lasagne.

Parsley

This herb is a must for all kitchens. The two main varieties "Curled" which is used primarily for decoration, and "Flat leaved" which has a stronger flavour and lends itself more for use in recipes.

Rosemary

This is a firm favourite finding its way into gardens all over the country. Being fully hardy it is easy to has numerous culinary uses and a beautiful aroma.
