What to do on the allotment in February


General Maintenance

Continue to protect plants against the weather
Check stakes and ties etc.
Hoe weeds when dry enough
Check the pH of the soil . Lime if necessary
Add manure to those beds that will need it in the new season
If dry enough begin digging and preparing beds
Check newly planted trees and firm around the roots
Check stores
Monitor for pests , slugs snails and big bud mite in currants

 Jerusalem artichoked (in warmer places.   In mild areas start sowing, cabbage, early carrots and hardy broad beans,
Onions and shallots from seed (unless growing from sets)

Make a bean trench, dig trench fill with manure and recover.
Prep an asparagus bed get rid of all perennial weeds and dig in lots of well rotten manure or compost.
